Book 33 is a book called Geekerella by Ashley Poston. I loved this book for many reasons even though it read somewhat like a fangirl's fanfiction (I say this not to offend) I feel the reason I love this book is because I relate to it so much. As a geek girl myself and as someone who likes going to comic cons to meet more people like me as well as to see the stars that have voiced or acted in a show I loved, I related with Elle so much. Now I will admit that I am not as bad as Elle is sometimes, like judging an actor before you see him play the part or having a blog where I analyze the show I love over and over (not that that is a bad thing, I just am a fan of many fandoms), but I am alike in wanting what I love to be preserved and not used by Hollywood as a platform for another hit movie. It’s actually why I get scared when they say a book that I love is being made into a movie or show.
SO the book, it is about Elle, a girl who lives basically like Cinderella. Her father was a huge fan of a tv show series much like star wars, star trek, and firefly. He started a huge comic con because of his love for this series and it was there that he met Elle’s mom (at least I think I got that part right). Well Elle’s father died in a car accident and left her with her stepmother and stepsisters, country club kind of people. So when her favorite show, the only thing that has been constant in her life, is becoming a movie in hopes of a reboot, she is very critical about whom they chose to be the lead character. Why? Because he played in a teen drama and is known in Hollywood mostly for his character and looks.
Darian is the actor chose to play the main role. He loves the show and the character he will play just like any other fan. He hates that he is seen as only a teen heartthrob and wants to do right by the character he is to play. That being said, he doesn’t like doing comic conventions because of some bad memories of a friend who betrayed him. So when he was told he would be attending the comic con that Elle’s father started, he tried to reach out to Elle’s father (who is dead) to try and get out of the appearance. The plot twist, Elle inherited her father’s phone and it’s number and the two start texting each other, falling for each other.
Now the reason I say this reads like a fanfiction is because this is a dream every fan would have. Who wouldn’t want to start a relationship with his/her favorite actor/actress (regardless if it’s romantic or not) Who wouldn’t want to talk with their favorite actor/actress likes friends, and have them be these really cool people that you always wanted them to be (because we do know not all of Hollywoods famous stars are really nice people). Now don’t let that fact that I said this book reads like a fanfiction, that it is bad. If you have ever read fanfiction, you will know there are some amazing authors out there who write them. They read really well and are really interesting. Hell, Fifty Shades of Grey started out as fanfiction and looked out that ended (or so I am told, and no I don’t like Fifty Shades of Grey, I personally think it was poorly written and this book is so much better than it).
All in all, if you are a geek like me, and you like going to conventions and day dreaming about meet the stars that play your favorite characters, then this book is something you will like. I thought it was amazing and I hope you guys do. See you next book.
Let's enjoy the many worlds there are to enjoy, in just our own heads.
